Hehl began his baseball career in the minor leagues in 1912. He pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Brooklyn Robins, and the New York Giants. He had a career record of 12-16 with a 3.86 ERA.

Hehl was also a talented bowler. He won the Catholic League bowling championship in 1920 and 1921. He was also a member of the United States bowling team that won the gold medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

Hehl retired from baseball in 1925 and from bowling in 1930. He died in 1975 at the age of 81.

Early Life and Baseball Career

Jake Hehl was born on April 22, 1893, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the son of German immigrants. Hehl began playing baseball at an early age and quickly developed a reputation as a talented pitcher.

In 1912, Hehl signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched for the Cardinals for two seasons before being traded to the Brooklyn Robins in 1914. Hehl pitched for the Robins for three seasons and then was traded to the New York Giants in 1917.

Hehl had his best season with the Giants in 1918. He went 10-6 with a 2.75 ERA and helped the Giants win the National League pennant. Hehl pitched in the World Series that year, but the Giants lost to the Boston Red Sox.

Bowling Career

In addition to his baseball career, Hehl was also a talented bowler. He began bowling in 1915 and quickly became one of the top bowlers in the country.

In 1920, Hehl won the Catholic League bowling championship. He won the championship again in 1921. In 1924, Hehl was a member of the United States bowling team that won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics.

Hehl retired from bowling in 1930. He was inducted into the National Bowling Hall of Fame in 1956.

Later Life and Death

After retiring from baseball and bowling, Hehl worked as a scout for the New York Giants. He also worked as a bowling instructor and a sportswriter.

Hehl died on June 20, 1975, at the age of 81. He was survived by his wife, Helen, and two children.

Legacy

Jake Hehl was a remarkable athlete who achieved success in both baseball and bowling. He was a talented pitcher who helped the New York Giants win the National League pennant in 1918. He was also a world-class bowler who won the Catholic League bowling championship twice and a gold medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

Hehl's story is an inspiration to athletes of all ages. He showed that it is possible to achieve great things with hard work and dedication.
