Chapter 1: The Early Years (1988-1991)

SummerSlam was created in 1988 as a way to compete with the NWA's Great American Bash. The first SummerSlam was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City and featured a main event of Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant. Chapter 5: The PG Era (2008-Present)

The PG Era is the current era of the WWE. It is a time of family-friendly programming and storylines. SummerSlam has been a key part of the PG Era, as it has been the stage for some of the most memorable matches of the era.

In 2011, CM Punk defeated John Cena to win the WWE Championship. In 2013, Daniel Bryan defeated Randy Orton to win the WWE Championship. And in 2016, Seth Rollins defeated Roman Reigns to win the WWE Championship.
