Chapter 1: The Early Years (1988-1991)

SummerSlam was created in 1988 as a way to compete with the NWA's Great American Bash. The first SummerSlam was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City and featured a main event of Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant. The match was a huge success and helped to establish SummerSlam as one of the WWE's biggest pay-per-views.

The early years of SummerSlam were marked by big-time matches and memorable moments. In 1989, The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan to win the WWF Championship. In 1990, The Undertaker made his debut at SummerSlam and defeated Jimmy Snuka in a coffin match. And in 1991, Bret Hart defeated Mr. Perfect in a classic Intercontinental Championship match.

Chapter 2: The New Generation Era (1992-1998)

The New Generation Era of the WWE was a time of change and transition. The old guard of Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, and The Ultimate Warrior was replaced by a new generation of stars, including Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, and Diesel. SummerSlam was a key part of this transition, as it was the stage for some of the most memorable matches of the New Generation Era.

In 1992, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart wrestled to a draw in a 60-minute Iron Man match. In 1994, Diesel defeated Shawn Michaels to win the WWF Championship. And in 1996, Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated Jake Roberts in a "Texas Death Match.

Chapter 3: The Attitude Era (1998-2002)

The Attitude Era was one of the most popular and successful eras in WWE history. It was a time of edgy programming and controversial storylines. SummerSlam was a key part of the Attitude Era, as it was the stage for some of the most memorable moments of the era.

In 1998, The Undertaker defeated Mankind in a Hell in a Cell match. In 1999, Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated The Undertaker to win the WWF Championship. And in 2000, Triple H defeated The Rock to win the WWF Championship.

Chapter 4: The Ruthless Aggression Era (2002-2008)

The Ruthless Aggression Era was a time of change and transition in the WWE. The old guard of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H was replaced by a new generation of stars, including John Cena, Batista, and Randy Orton. SummerSlam was a key part of this transition, as it was the stage for some of the most memorable matches of the Ruthless Aggression Era.

In 2002, John Cena defeated Kurt Angle to win the WWE Championship. In 2005, Batista defeated Triple H to win the World Heavyweight Championship. And in 2007, Randy Orton defeated John Cena to win the WWE Championship.

Chapter 5: The PG Era (2008-Present)

The PG Era is the current era of the WWE. It is a time of family-friendly programming and storylines. SummerSlam has been a key part of the PG Era, as it has been the stage for some of the most memorable matches of the era.

In 2011, CM Punk defeated John Cena to win the WWE Championship. In 2013, Daniel Bryan defeated Randy Orton to win the WWE Championship. And in 2016, Seth Rollins defeated Roman Reigns to win the WWE Championship.
