In Philadelphia, Thomson became involved in politics and journalism. He wrote a series of articles in support of the American Revolution, and he was a member of the Committee of Correspondence, which coordinated resistance to British rule.
In 1774, Thomson was elected secretary of the Continental Congress. He served in this position for the duration of the American Revolution, and he played a key role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.
After the war, Thomson continued to serve the new nation. He was appointed secretary of the Board of War and Ordnance, and he later served as commissioner of the Land Office.
