Why We Can Afford to Abandon Our Public Schools: Unlocking a Future of Educational Freedom and Innovation
The American public education system is in crisis. Our children are falling behind their peers in other developed countries, and the gap is only widening. The system is also increasingly unaffordable, with costs rising faster than inflation. It is time for us to abandon our public schools and embrace a new model of education that prioritizes freedom, innovation, and parental choice.

The Failure of Our Public Schools
There is a mountain of evidence that our public schools are failing our children. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) shows that American students are performing below their peers in other developed countries in math, reading, and science. The gap between white students and minority students is also growing.
In addition to their poor academic performance, our public schools are also increasingly unaffordable. The average cost of public education per student has risen by more than 50% in the past decade. This is due in part to the increasing cost of teacher salaries, benefits, and pensions. It is also due to the increasing number of regulations and mandates that are imposed on public schools.
The Case for Abandoning Public Schools
Given the failure of our public schools, it is time for us to abandon them and embrace a new model of education. This new model should be based on the following principles:
- Freedom: Parents should be free to choose the best education for their children, regardless of their income or zip code.
- Innovation: Schools should be free to experiment with new and innovative approaches to education.
- Parental choice: Parents should be empowered to make decisions about their children's education, including the choice of school, curriculum, and teaching methods.
A New Model of Education
The new model of education that we need should be based on the following principles:
- School choice: Parents should be able to choose from a variety of public, private, and homeschooling options for their children.
- Education savings accounts: Parents should be able to use education savings accounts to pay for their children's education expenses, including tuition, fees, and other costs.
- Tax credits for education: Parents should be able to claim tax credits for their children's education expenses.
The Benefits of Abandoning Public Schools
Abandoning our public schools would have a number of benefits, including:
- Improved academic performance: Children who attend private schools or are homeschooled consistently outperform their public school peers on standardized tests.
- Lower costs: A new model of education would be more affordable than the current system.
- Greater parental choice: Parents would be empowered to make decisions about their children's education.
The American public education system is failing our children. It is time for us to abandon it and embrace a new model of education that prioritizes freedom, innovation, and parental choice. This new model would improve academic performance, lower costs, and give parents more control over their children's education.
If you are interested in learning more about the case for abandoning public schools, I encourage you to read my book, 'Why We Can Afford to Abandon Our Public Schools: Unlocking a Future of Educational Freedom and Innovation.' In this book, I provide a detailed analysis of the problems with our public schools and offer a comprehensive plan for a new model of education.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Smith
